The Crumlin Road Gaol was built in 1845 and used as a jail until 1996. Following a significant renovation, the prison has reopened as a tourist attraction and meeting centre. You may now take a guided tour of the prison and learn about its history, from when it held women and children to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and why the prison was decommissioned. During your tour of the gaol, you will visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, sit in the Governor’s chair, view all of the wings from the circle, and, of course, visit the condemned man’s cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.
Crumlin Road Gaol
Crumlin Road Gaol, considered one of Belfast’s best attractions, is a must-see.
