The Museum and its exhibits are housed in the historic Market House, a late-seventeenth-century building that has been extensively renovated. The bottom level of the structure was where the town’s merchants sold their goods and sought shelter, as well as where John Wesley lectured in 1756 and 1789. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the first-floor Assembly Rooms were a focal point of Lisburn’s social and political life, holding many soirees, balls, dance courses, and political gatherings.
