Antrim town is situated in the Six Mile Water valley on the northeastern shore of Lough (lake) Neagh. In 1798, British troops beat tens of thousands of nationalists (mainly Presbyterian) headed by United Irishmen rebel Henry Joy McCracken. One of the best specimens of Irish round (watch) towers, originating from the 10th century, rises 93 feet (28 metres) tall and 17 feet (5 metres) in a circle just to the north. Antrim Castle, which was constructed in the 17th century, serves as a reminder of the town’s past strategic significance. Antrim, a bustling market town and vital road crossroads, was formerly a major linen manufacturing centre.
