Named after a fort which was in the county many years ago, this county is known for its beautiful scenery and landscapes and has been featured in many “Best Places to live in Britain lists” the aforementioned fort was located in Downpatrick within the county, however, this isn’t the only famous accolade this county has. Start off your trip to County Down by experiencing the truly rich heritage this county has to offer by visiting the Inch Abbey, or what remains of it that is. The abbey was founded in 1180 during the Anglo-Norman invasion of East Ulster. After you visit to the abbey shift things up a gear with a hike up Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland’s highest peak reaching a shakily scary 850 metres, along your journey to the peak you may stumble across the remains of two prehistoric ‘Burial Cairns’. They are assumed to be from 3000BC to 3300BC. If summiting an 850-metre high mountain isn’t enough of a thrill for you then on your descent think about heading over to Let’s Go Hydro, a high octane, challenging, family fun water assault course. Let’s Go Hydro offer a wide range of water activities such as; Wakeboarding, Kayaking, Knee Boarding, Paddle Boarding and something called Aqua Rugby? Can’t quite get our head around this concept so you’ll have to visit to find out more.
